Views Around the Rainy Day Garden

I haven't posted some wider views of the garden in awhile. Here's a look of the RainyDay Garden as summer approaches.

Views from the back of the house. Below is behind the little garage/shop. The summer blooms are around the corner, but anchoring the beds is a spirea and fothergilla (which has the best orange colored foliage in autumn). Bee balm and liatris are popping up. Rose campion is already blooming and attracting swallowtail butterflies to visit.

Below, from the above pic and panning left. We see those liatris spiking upward, Dwarf conifers dot the landscape. Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Iceberg' is the silver/green hued conifer (I love this one soooo much!) with Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Tuffet' brightening the scene with golden/yellow hues and then a lesser known Picea omorika 'Tijn' (dwarf Serbian spruce). Burdundy color in the background from ninebark 'Coppertina'. Lime green color from three lemon cypress shrubs that I use to add a pop of color and to create a privacy screen from ol' man Jerry's yard. Ceanothus in the far back continues the privacy screen.  We can see the bronze fennel and bee balm coming up. There will also be rudbeckia, eryngium and lobelia blooms this summer.

Next, the other side of the immediate back yard. The coral bark maple (Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku') anchors this bed. Chamaecyparis lawson 'Blue Surprise' provides a rare, blue pop of color. Behind that is sambucus nigra 'Eva' (Black Lace Elderberry). Another ninebark, this one is 'Center Glow' with persicaria 'Lance Corporal' mixing in. Low middle is the sweet little tsuga canadensis 'Gentsch White' with another spirea (which is probably coming out) and native woodwardia fimbriata 'Giant Chain Fern'. This side of the yard went through a major transformation winter of 2017.

The front of the garage aka 'trailerville' now has a cute little seating area. I have a mini grove of himalayan maidenhair ferns (adiantum venustum) nestled along the base of the house with pink jasmine and a clematis 'jackmanii' climbing up the latic. Pots with northern sea oats and crocosmia will provide summer color and movement in the breeze. A twombly 'Red Sentinal' maple (Acer palmatum Twombly's Red Sentinel') provides privacy from the street view. I purchased the patio set this spring in hopes of creating another little private nook to enjoy in our narrow shaped yard.

And the new flower garden in the front of the house. It's ready to pop with a river of rainbow color. This bed is going to provide a lot of photo ops this summer. It was an old privet hedge last year. The husband unit and I had quite an adventure pulling it out with our truck last summer. (We might have broken 2 tow ropes in the process!!)

This new garden will have salvia, echinacea, lily, yarrow, honeysuckle, sedum and asters.
