Wednesday Vignette
I'm joining Anna over at Flutter & Hum for a new Wednesday meme simply called 'Vignette'.
Today, my scene is one of not giving up. I simply love Lewisia cotyledon. But I did not succeed in overwintering any of the ones I purchased last year.
I'm not giving up and will try these beautiful plants again....in a well draining container ;)

Oh no! I can't believe they didn't over winter for you. I'm in Portland, and other than losing one to rot, they've all fared well. It's one of my favorite plants.
ReplyDeleteThey all rotted :( I'm hoping a well draining container will help.
DeleteYou should try a colander. That worked so well for me, I did it again with a second one. I lost several to winter rot too, when I tried them in the ground.
ReplyDeleteAlison, I'm totally going to try the colander route. I loved the way yours looked!
DeleteI have on small Lewisia that hangs on every year. I think planting it on a slight slope must help, plus my soil is so dry.
ReplyDeleteLinda, you are probably right...sloping would be good. I think I'm going to try the colander pot approach first. Finger's X'd.
DeleteOuch - I'm so sorry you lost them! But like you said - they are beautiful enough to keep trying 'til you get it right. Love it with the green background! Maybe you could do what Alison did - grow them in an old colander? I thought that was a stroke of genius!
ReplyDeleteFunny as I posted a reply on my blog about lewisias. They don;y like wetness gathering in the rosette so when I plant them outside I plant them on a tilt so water runs off especially in winter, Alternatively some people pop a little roof of glass over then and a frame with open sides,
ReplyDeleteHi Sue,
DeleteGreat idea on the glass roof! I'm going to see about putting them in a colander for a potted approach. They are native to the southern part of our state that does not receive a lot of moisture, so it makes sense that they are picky about that.
What sweet little flowers! I can see why you would want to try them again. I just lost two potted shrubs because the pots filled with water and didn't drain soon enough. I noticed too late.

Funny, they are going great guns in a gravel berm where nothing else survived. Just a lucky accident, I guess. Jane (Mulchmaid) has featured them in her header looking spectacular. If I had questions, I would go to her.
ReplyDeleteAh Jenni, it looks like I have finally figured out how to reach you...lol. I love Lewisia's also...and did manage to over winter one for almost 2 years...I had to have it inside. Their colors are so clear and bright, they speak to me of summer.
